Review: A Matter of Magic

Title: A Matter of Magic
Author: Patricia C. Wrede
Published: June 2010
Publisher: Orb Books
Reviewer: Elisa

Summary: When a stranger offers her a small fortune to break into a traveling magician's wagon, Kim doesn't hesitate. Having grown up a waif in the dirty streets of London, Kim isn't above a bit of breaking-and-entering. A hard life and lean times have schooled her in one lesson: steal from them before they steal from you. But when the magician catches her in the act, Kim thinks she's done for. Until he suggests she become his apprentice; then the real trouble begins.

Kim soon finds herself entangled with murderers, thieves, and cloak-and-dagger politics, all while trying to learn how to become both a proper lady and a magician in her own right. Magic and intrigue go hand in hand in Mairelon the Magician and The Magician's Ward, two fast-paced novels filled with mystery and romance, set against the intricate backdrop of Regency England.

Review: This book contains both Mairelon the Magician and The Magician's Ward.  They are enjoyable and quick reads. If you like a regency story with mystery, magic and a tiny bit of romance, this is the book for you.  I got confused with all the character names in the first book, Mairelon the Magician, but the characters revealed themselves once I kept reading.
The Magician's Ward was another enjoyable mystery, though there is not much big tension until the end, unless you count tension for Kim learning how to be a lady (and there is plenty of that!). Kim is now Mairelon's ward and is being launched into London society this time around. So, even though they are trying to solve a mystery and save lives including their own, the social niceties must be followed... Great writing, rated "G" romance, thieves cant to understand, I give it 4 stars.
