My thoughts:
Learning in the Dark is a great book. The story begins with a young girl named Lynn sitting on a rock. A group of boys, two who are brothers named Carter and Davis, throw Lynn into a cliff below them in a teasing gesture. Unfortunately, that one teasing gesture goes horribly awry, and leaves Lynn blind, as well as Carter and Davis's family completely broken. Fast forward twelve years later. Lynn is trying very hard to overcome her past, become a medical doctor, and prove to her parents that she is not helpless. Carter is also trying very hard to become a medical doctor, and to overcome the terrible accident that he caused years before. His older brother, Davis, who is also in the medical field, is just attempting to find a reason to live... when he meets Sophie. Sophie is a beautiful, smart, talented woman who takes a quick liking to Davis, and soon they are both irrevocably in love with one another. But there is a catch : Sophie happens to be Lynn's best friend - a truth that could rip apart Sophie and Davis's relationship forever. And while Davis is just finding that out, Carter is finding out that he has enrolled in the same medical school that Lynn has enrolled in. As these four people's lives entwine, we are allowed to view the hardships and triumphs of love, hate, destruction, and forgiveness. I loved how every page kept me on edge ; I never knew when the characters would make some heartbreaking, completely shocking decision. The book is extremely fast-paced and interesting, and the ending was very, very shocking. With a sublime plot, gorgeous characters, and beautiful writing, Bechtel's Learning in the Dark is an extraordinary read ; I highly recommend picking it up today.
