Die For Me is an amazing, astoundingly lovely novel.
The story follows sixteen year old Kate, who has recently moved from New York to Paris to live with her grandparents, since her parents have recently died in a car accident. While living in Paris would usually be a dream come true for any girl, for Kate its more like a nightmare . Every moment of her life is practically spent in slow motion, the pain of losing her mother and father haunting her every day.
Unlike her outgoing and overly friendly sister, Georgia, Kate doesn’t feel like stepping out of the front door, much less making new friends. So she spends her days indoors reading and sleeping and crying her heart out. But one day, when she takes her reading activities to a nearby café, she sees a group of striking young men who immediately capture her interest. In particular, she can swear one of them keeps looking at her - the one with the extraordinarily sexy smile and thick black hair, the one who she noticed from the start. Not having the guts to approach him, Kate tries to ignore the spark she feels and go back to her typical daily routine.
But that plan falls to pieces when, a few days after spotting the impossibly beautiful boy, Georgia and Kate go out for a late night walk and Kate spots the same boy who she’d seen at the café - jumping off a bridge after a girl about to commit suicide.
Unsure what to think, Kate stays away from the attractive stranger - at least until he approaches her and lets her known his name is Vincent. As Vincent and Kate keep running into each other, her feelings toward him grow, but she’s not so sure that she can trust him. Still, she can’t seem to stay away from him. So she accepts his invitation out onto a date, only to have it finish early because Vincent has something important to take care of - something that Kate thinks may be involved with the incident she had seen a few nights before. Curious to see what he’s up to, Kate follows him, only to see Vincent walk into a train station with his friend Jules, and then see Jules pull a man out of the train tracks and take his place, getting run over by the on-coming train instead.
Shocked and confused, Kate soon finds out that Vincent and Jules are part of a group of zombie-like beings called Revenants ; beings who are immortal, but in exchange for eternal life must die for people in need over and over again. They always come back to life, though, but even so, after her parents death, Kate isn’t so sure she can stand Vincent dying again and again - and she isn’t sure if being with Vincent is the smartest idea. Will Kate risk a normal, safe life for a chance at love, or will the pain from her past keep her from opening her heart up again?
I loved everything about this book, from the beautiful writing to the awesome characters, and the amazing backdrop of Paris. The City of Light was the perfect place for Kate and Vincent’s romance ; the whole scenery seemed just as important as the characters themselves, whether it was the small apartment complex Kate lived in or the huge gothic mansion that Vincent and the other Revenants lived. All of the characters in the book were awesome! Kate is an amazing, intelligent heroine, (who is also actually a normal human!) with a never-give-up attitude and a great, sarcastic sense of humor. Vincent is an equally awesome hero, witty, strong, and funny while remaining sensitive and romantic. Jules, Charlotte, Georgia, and all of the other characters (who I can not name because that would spoil everything ;P) all brought something unique to the book, whether with humor and wit, strength and creativity, care and love, or hate and vengeance. The back stories of each character are both tear-inducing and highly interesting, and the whole idea of “Revenants” is refreshing and new. The thought of sexy zombies is pretty funny, but the way Plum writes it makes the idea extremely serious. I look forward to learning more about them and their enemies in the next book, and being reunited with these amazing characters.
Full of action, suspense, heartbreak, and romance, Die For Me is a novel that will rein you in and refuse to let you go until you’ve finished ; a must read.
