Would you like to tell us a little about yourself?
--Well, I have horrible stage fright—thankfully, we’re not on a stage. But seriously, folks…I’m a Florida native (yes, we do exist), but no, I don’t live near the beach. I travel to New Orleans at least once a year, for inspiration, rejuvenation and extreme libation. Oh—and I recently got a puppy! He’s scared of the cats.
What inspired you to write?
--Different series have different inspirations. In the case of Taken and Frankie Post, my critique partner Shea MacLeod and I discussed co-writing a book featuring a psychic detective. I shot the first chapter off in about fifteen minutes. She immediately deemed it too racy for her, but I was already in love with the noir feeling—so Taken was born.
What authors influenced you as a writer?
--Lots of writers—so many, I’m not naming names, lol. I think everything we read influences us in some way, either negatively or positively. So narrowing the list down would prove far too difficult and time consuming.
What is your favorite Quote? Why is it your favorite?
--Lauren Bacall, To Have or Have Not—“You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow.”
Saucy without being sleazy, coy without being crass—in other words, perfect.
If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world, which would it be?
--This is the hardest interview question ever, because I can think of a ton where I’d love to be. But if I only get to choose one, I have to go with Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series, crazy fae and mirrors and everything. And not because I want Barrons. I want Ryodan. And I’ll be severely upset if someone else gets him, lol.
What is at least one thing that every writer needs to have or do?
--A basic grasp of research. Whether that means you spend time at the library or at Ask.com, you need to know what you’re writing about. One of the things I see a lot of readers complain about is the use of incorrect language, time-line wise, in historical novels. Readers are ridiculously smart—probably smarter than most writers—and they notice and remember everything.
Are your books different to your personal favorite books by other authors?
--I can’t say I really have a favorite book. I’m a huge Nora Roberts fan and for a while I was a fan of Laurell K. Hamilton (not so much anymore) and I recently discovered Mira Grant and Steig Larssen. So I’m kind of all over the place, lol. I think that’s where some of the different elements of the books come from, just my widespread reading habits.
What lead you to writing in this genre?
--The first book I ever finished was very light, very fluffy, very humourous. It was a huge deal just because I finished something, which I hadn’t done before. When I tried to write a second book in the same vein, I couldn’t get into the groove. And the more I tried, the more I hated the idea. So I took a break, did a lot of reading. Eventually, I drifted into urban fantasy and paranormal romance, and I got the urge to write again. Shades of Gray was born from that; New Moon Rising came from the idea of urban fantasy in a rural setting; and Taken was the idea of writing a fast-paced, sexy, noir-type book.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
--Another tough question. I enjoy almost all the writing process—the research, getting to know the characters, the actual writing. I love telling a story, putting in all the details.
Least favorite part of the writing process?
--Editing. Hands down. My hatred of editing is well documented, and you always know when I’m editing because I whine about it. A LOT, lol.
What are you currently working on?
--Two different works. The follow up to New Moon Rising, Harvest Moon Rising, which should be out in April this year, and the first in a series slated for release in 2013. You can find out more about the super secret series on my blog.
