I think I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about the message behind the Supernova Saga.
Supernova is a tale about destiny, free will, and fate. It shows us how even the tiniest action or inaction on our part can potentially affect the lives of those around us.
I’m the type of person who likes to plan ahead, which is ironic, because I don’t even write by an outline. I just write it like I see it when I sit down in what my family has lovingly dubbed my throne. No, I don’t write while sitting on a toilet. I’m talking about the chair behind my desk. But I digress.
What I’m talking about, is that with every major decision, my mind warps into the future to hopefully predict what might happen as a result of that decision – whether adverse or favorable – and who might be affected in the long run. Now, I’ll admit that I don’t take this into consideration for minor decisions that I’m faced with, but then again, who does? That brings me to my point. Even minor decisions can set off a domino effect around us.
For example: I decide to go to the grocery store early on a Saturday morning to beat the afternoon crowd. On the way there, I cross paths with someone who’s been out all night drinking and cheating on their spouse. They are trying to make it home before their significant other wakes up and finds they never made it home the night before. He/She runs a red light and careens into the side of my vehicle. As a result, I’m hospitalized. While in the emergency room, I’m given pain medication to make me comfortable. I have an adverse reaction and throw up all over the floor because the nurse didn’t make sure I had one of those nice kidney shaped, Pepto Bismol colored barf dishes to yack in. She comes in to
check my blood pressure, slips on the bile on the floor, hits her head, and is knocked out cold. Now, she is also hospitalized. Nurse No-Barf-Dish-For-You was behind on her car payment and needed to get to the bank on her lunch break to pay her car note. She doesn’t make it, and while she’s in the hospital, the bank comes and repos her car. Now, she can’t make it to work.
I could go on and on with this, but I think you get my point. If I had just waited until the afternoon, or even five minutes later, to walk out my door to go to the grocery store, Nurse No-Barf-Dish-For-You wouldn’t be in danger of losing her job. Oh, and by the way, the scumbag who was cheating totally got busted. I feel I should point out that this didn’t actually happen to me ;)
So, while we have no control over someone else’s decisions, and no way of telling what might happen with a tiny, insignificant decision we make ourselves, be mindful of the ones you can control. Just remember, you can’t thwart fate. I believe Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote, “Ours is not to question why. Ours is but to do and die.” In short, everything happens for a reason.
